China’s August gas output returns to growth while refining remains below last year
Industrial natural-gas output rose 0.8% year on year to 21.4 billion cubic metres. Refinery throughput fell 6.9%, showing a different operating picture downstream.

The story explained
The September 15 release reports August crude production of 18.43 million tonnes, up 0.8% year on year. Gas output reached 21.4 billion cubic metres, also up 0.8%, after a 0.9% decline in July. January–August gas production rose 1.1%.
August refinery throughput was 59.07 million tonnes, down 6.9%. The decline narrowed by 8.9 percentage points from July, but output remained below the previous year. Cumulative throughput fell 6.6% to 456.12 million tonnes.
The statistics cover industrial enterprises with annual main-business revenue of at least CNY20 million. They describe production activity rather than plant-specific maintenance schedules, capital approvals or equipment purchases.
Why it matters
Editorial analysis: gas production and refining activity offer different starting points for customer research. Separate maintenance, modifications and new capacity when assessing possible flow-control needs. Production figures alone cannot establish a valve order or its timing.
