The story explained

China’s National Energy Administration released January–September electricity statistics on 26 October. Installed generating capacity reached about 4.13 TW at September-end, while average equipment utilization fell by 194 hours to 2,174 hours.

The official table reports capacity in units of 10,000 kW. Thermal capacity stood at 1,593.43 GW, up 6.0% year on year; nuclear capacity reached 68.54 GW, up 9.7%; and hydro reached 457.25 GW, up 3.3%. These are installed totals, not additions during September.

Capacity additions over the first nine months totalled 252.93 GW. They included 66.25 GW of thermal generation, 6.02 GW of nuclear and 9.16 GW of hydro. The table’s starred changes for thermal and nuclear additions represent absolute increases of 9.57 GW and 4.49 GW, not percentage growth.

The national coal-consumption rate for electricity supply was 305.1 grams per kWh, and thermal plants’ own-use electricity rate was 5.9%. Lower average utilization and a larger installed fleet measure different aspects of the system. Neither establishes confirmed valve orders or finished-equipment prices.

EDITORIAL INTERPRETATION

Why it matters

Thermal, nuclear and hydro additions provide context for steam, feedwater, cooling and auxiliary equipment demand. Procurement usually precedes commissioning, so installed capacity cannot be treated as a current purchasing value.
