China publishes coal–renewables integration policy covering flexibility and heat storage
Dated 28 September and published on 21 October, the policy sets directions rather than confirmed projects or orders.

The story explained
China’s National Energy Administration published document 69 on 21 October; it was signed on 28 September. Integration must preserve system support and flexibility, with renewable capacity matched to the upgraded coal plant’s regulating capability.
The policy covers shared electricity export, clean heating, captive plants and auxiliary energy use. It supports deeper turndown, electric heating and thermal storage, alongside research into storage media, high-temperature heat pumps and coordinated controls.
Renewable sites should generally be within 100 km of the coal plant, with separate electricity metering. Eligible projects may receive funding, but no project list, subsidy amount or equipment quantities are specified.
Why it matters
Editorial analysis: Cycling and storage switching may change steam, feedwater and heat-transfer valve duties; demand assessment requires an actual retrofit design.
