FERC proposes streamlined authorisation for LNG plant modifications
FERC’s proposed rule RM26-2-001, published on 20 October, would establish procedures for selected LNG-plant activities without individual authorisation orders. Comments are due on 21 December.

The story explained
FERC’s proposed rule RM26-2-001, published on 20 October, would establish procedures for selected LNG-plant activities without individual authorisation orders. Comments are due on 21 December.
Conditional automatic authorisation would cover replacements or modifications involving piping, valves, rotating equipment, controls and safety-instrumented components. Activities must remain within existing footprint and design limits, avoid capacity increases and adverse safety effects, and have minor or no environmental impacts.
The proposal also addresses auxiliary systems including nitrogen, instrument air, utility water and relief/vent arrangements. Capacity expansions fall outside the proposed automatic category. The text remains a proposal and does not itself authorise immediate construction.
Why it matters
If adopted, approval routes for brownfield modifications may change; design limits, interlocks and relief duties still require engineering assessment.
