Baker Hughes counts 603 US rigs and 220 Canadian rigs
The 23 October count is flat in the US and up three in Canada.

The story explained
Baker Hughes updated its North American rig count on 23 October. The US total was 603, unchanged from 16 October, while Canada’s total increased by three to 220.
Against the stated comparison date of 24 October 2025, the US count was higher by 53 and Canada’s by 21. These are comparisons between specific weekly observations, not annual-average counts.
The company’s North American methodology covers active oil, gas and geothermal drilling. A rig generally must drill on location for at least four of seven days. Transit, rig assembly and non-drilling workovers, completions or production tests are excluded.
This brief uses weekly North American observations only. The international figure displayed alongside them is monthly and should not enter the same weekly calculation. The unit is rigs; no energy or finished-valve price is reported.
Why it matters
Drilling activity offers context for oilfield-service and equipment demand, but cannot establish a valve order. An unchanged aggregate can also conceal shifts among regions or drilling targets.
