Hunan industrial energy use falls 5.6% in first nine months
The 23 October release reports an 8.7% rise in natural-gas use and an 8.4% decline in energy intensity.

The story explained
Hunan’s statistics bureau published its first-nine-month industrial energy assessment on 23 October. Energy use by industrial enterprises above the designated size fell 5.6% year on year in January–September 2026; energy per unit of industrial value added fell 8.4%.
Within the consumption mix, raw-coal use decreased 13.2%, natural-gas use increased 8.7%, and use of recovered heat and pressure increased 5.4%. These are changes in energy consumption, not spot prices or finished-valve quotations.
The six energy-intensive industrial categories together used 6.2% less energy. Consumption fell 15.4% in petroleum, coal and other fuel processing, and 13.2% in electricity and heat production and supply. The sector detail matters when interpreting the aggregate decline.
Hydro, wind and solar generation within the reported industrial scope rose 8.6% in total. Hydropower generation increased 23.9%, supported by improved rainfall and inflows, reaching a 27.8% generation share, up 6.2 percentage points. The increase cannot be attributed entirely to newly built capacity.
Why it matters
Gas and recovered-energy trends provide context for fuel switching, thermal management and efficiency projects. Aggregate energy statistics are not evidence of equipment orders.
